Gents Open 24th June 2018 - view
In perfect weather, 128 players teed it up for our 10th Annual Gents Open on Sunday 24th June.
The course was in perfect condition, and after the long hot dry spell was running fast, with speedy greens. The comments from many players was it was like playing on a seaside links course. As a result, posting a good low score proved to be a challenge. One of the conditions of our Competition, is that players can only win 1 prize. If they qualify for more than 1 then the highest value is paid out.
In the main Scratch competition, it was a close run affair, with the winner having to be decided on a countback over the last 9 holes. Lee Jenkins (Elderslie G C) and Kilmacolm’s Conar Campbell both had excellent rounds of 1 under par 68, however LEE JENKINS lifted the Trophy and the first prize voucher of £160 with a better inward half of 34, 1 better that Conar’s 35.
Conar had the consolation however of picking up 1st place in the A Class Handicap event, with his Net 63 earning him a voucher for £110. In 2nd place with a Net 65 was Jim Schiavone (Lundin Links), 3rd place was Frank Boyland (Kilmacolm) with a 66, edging out Norman Bowie (Machrahanish) on countback. On the same score of 66 was Kilmacolm’s Charles Conway who was unfortunate to miss out on the prizes due to countback.
In the B Class Handicap, a Net 64 from Scott McManus (Uphall G C) playing off a handicap of 10 gave him a 1 shot winning margin over Euan Rae (Kilmacolm). In 3rd place was Keith Wight (Mucckhart) with a 66 and in 4th place David McLelland (Cochrane Castle) with a 69.
Shot of the day however must belong to Edward Daly from Cowglen Golf Club. His hole in 1 at the 17th not only won him the admiration of his playing partners, but as it is a sponsored hole at Kilmacolm, he wins a case of beer. A good way to celebrate.
